Glen Abbey is Saved

9 July 2021

Glen Abbey golf course has been saved from development in Oakville

Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark announced Friday morning he has secured a commitment with ClubLink to withdraw their appeals with the Ontario Land Tribunal, but also to immediately with plans for development.

Town councillors have officially asked the province to save Glen Abbey from development.

A unanimous motion approved at a special meeting on July 6 asks the provincial government to use either a ministerial zoning order or other tool to protect the golf course lands from a redevelopment application by owner ClubLink.

Halton Regional Council unanimously passed a Resolution that reminds the Province and supports the Province in their commitment to protect Glen Abbey.

The motion, brought forward by Regional Chair Gary Carr and seconded by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton requests the Province use all resources and tools at its disposal to protect the Glen Abbey cultural heritage landscape in recognition of the importance of these lands to the Town, the Region and its residents.

“Our resolution was passed to remind our Provincial counterparts of their commitment to protect Glen Abbey,” said Mayor Burton.

The protection of the Glen Abbey cultural heritage landscape is supported at the Provincial level by Members of Provincial Parliament Stephen Crawford (Oakville) and Effie Triantafilopoulos (Oakville North-Burlington).

On June 16th, Halton Regional Council will consider a resolution requesting that the Province use all resources and tools at it's disposal to protect Glen Abbey lands from future development.

TCRA Residents are invited to message gary.carr@halton.ca directly with the following;

"I wholeheartedly support Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr’s motion to save Glen Abbey and I am thrilled with his leadership to request the Province to not approve development of these lands - the government’s actions will confirm that they truly support the Oakville community!"

We Love Oakville, sent out the following newsletter on 19 April:

ACT NOW TO SAVE GLEN ABBEY!!

The proposed development would be like dropping a small town into the heart of Oakville without any official planning. It represents 22% more growth than Oakville plans for the next 25 years.

We Love Oakville has thrown its support behind the Save Glen Abbey movement.  Send a letter to Queen’s Park!

Save Glen Abbey seeks to save the green space and historic site from development. Glen Abbey’s owner (ClubLink) is proposing to replace it with a whole new urban district, with over 3,000 residential units and accompanying commerce, roads, services and parks. The proposal ignores both the Regional and Town Official Plans. It dismisses Glen Abbey’s designation as a heritage landscape, and its iconic fame as both the home of the Canadian Open and the first golf course designed entirely by the celebrated Jack Nicklaus.

If you care about orderly growth and protecting our heritage, add your voice to the calls to protect Glen Abbey.

We Love Oakville, a coalition of Oakville residents associations of which TCRA is a founding member, has announced that it is joining Save Glen Abbey and Oakvillegreen Conservation Association in opposing the developments proposed on the Glen Abbey Golf Course land.  Read more in this Inside Halton article.

Save Glen Abbey  has put together an e-petition:

HELLO ‘SAVE GLEN ABBEY’ SUPPORTERS,

Members of the Save Glen Abbey coalition met with MPP Stephen Crawford and MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos in September. During the meeting it was clear that they both understand that the residents of Oakville do not want the Glen Abbey property developed.

Due to the pandemic, we can no longer collect signatures on a paper petition. SGA asked the MPPs if the Province would consider allowing groups to submit electronic petitions following a process similar to the one already in place at the Federal level. The MPPs explained that if such a system were put in place it would not be ready before the LPAT hearing begins in August. However, MPP Crawford did say that if SGA prepares and gathers signatures on an e-petition he will attempt to present the paper petition and talk to the electronic petition in the Legislature.

Please take a moment to sign the petition here and forward this email to friends who want to preserve this ‘Cultural Heritage Landscape’ for future generations.

Thank you for your continued support. The LPAT hearing will begin in less than 9 months. Let’s be sure our voices are heard.

Background

In November 2015, ClubLink began conversation with the Town on a proposal to redevelop the 92.7 hectare Glen Abbey Golf Course property including 3,200 residential units, and 121,000 square feet of new office and retail space.  Click here for details on ClubLink's  site plan proposal.

The Town is opposed to scheme on the basis that it would destroy a site which the Town believes to be a vital part of Oakville's cultural heritage.  Furthermore, the Town believes that the proposed development would grievously damage the Livable Oakville Plan (Oakville's official plan) and set a precedent for unconstrained development throughout Oakville.  Click here for details of the Town's position and for current status.

Save Glen Abbey, a grassroots coalition of Oakville residents, has been fighting the proposal in order to protect the Livable Oakville Plan.  Click here for their website.
