Coyotes

29 December 2022

Coyotes have developed an affinity for urban living as we have encroached on their natural environment. Fortunately, several simple precautions can reduce human-coyote interactions and conflicts and help us co-exist. Read more here

Town of Oakville

Town of Oakville holds Coyote Information Session Wednesday, March 31

WHAT: The town is hosting a virtual Coyote Information Session. This public meeting will provide facts about urban coyotes and answers to residents’ questions.

WHEN:  Wednesday, March 31, 2021
6:30 p.m.

WHERE:  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this meeting will be held virtually. Visit the coyote page at oakville.ca to pre-register. Once registration is complete you will receive an email providing you with the link to join the meeting on March 31.

WHO: Town Staff

Representative from Coyote Watch Canada

BACKGROUND:

  • Coyotes are found in every urban centre in North America. Many people think it is unusual to see coyotes on a town road or sidewalk. It’s actually very common. Much like foxes, squirrels, raccoons and other animals, they have found a permanent home in urban areas.
  • Late January to mid-February is mating season. Spring is pupping season. Coyotes may be dispersing during this time looking for a potential mate and den site. With the COVID-19 restrictions that are in place, coyotes may be more noticeable as more of us are at home and out walking during the day.
  • Coyotes are not considered to be a significant risk to people, but seeing one on your property or while out for a walk can be unnerving. There are steps we can take to avoid conflicts with coyotes.
  • The town has a coyote management program in place which includes public education. When we are all more knowledgeable of our wildlife and act responsibly and respectfully, it is easier to coexist. Join the meeting to (a) get answers to your coyote questions, (b) learn how to respond to coyote sightings, and (c) gain the knowledge you need to be coyote smart
