Traffic Calming

Traffic calming is a measure available to the town that can be used to mitigate speeding in instances where higher speeds have been observed and conventional methods of speed deterrence, such as enforcement and education, have not been effective. Some examples of include radar speed display signs, speed cushions and roundabouts.  More here

40 km/h speed limits

There have been complaints from residents of Oakville for years about speeding in residential neighbourhoods. Council has decided to do something about it.

Following pilot studies in the West River and Heritage Way neighbourhoods, Council has decided on the following:

  • The existing neighborhood 40 km/h zones in the West River and Heritage Way areas will be retained and complementary measures aimed at speed reduction will be investigated in these areas.

  • Staff will develop a two to three-year implementation plan to establish a 40 km/h speed limit on all local and minor collector roads across the town of Oakville, in conjunction with a comprehensive education program, working with Halton Region Police and any other complementary measures deemed necessary. Staff will report on the implementation plan in September 2021.

  • Implementation will be funded through reserves.

  • In anticipation of the Province allowing municipalities to issue Automatic Speed Camera fines (simplifying and improving enforcement) staff will design and install all necessary infrastructure required for the implementation of four semi-fixed speed cameras, by the end of 2021 within existing Community Safety Zones.

Stay tuned! It looks like Ontario is moving in the same direction as the UK and Australia in adopting automatic enforcement of vehicle speed limits.
